“Do you feel safe walking your dog?”
This question weighs heavily on the minds of many dog guardians, especially those with reactive dogs. I recently had a conversation with a lovely guardian who shared their unease while walking their large, strong, and reactive dog. It's a sentiment many can relate to, but there are ways to ensure safer and more enjoyable walks for both you and your canine companion.
If you find yourself in a similar situation, here are 10 tips to help you regain confidence and enjoyment during your dog walks:
1. Change Up Your Routine: Consider taking a break from your regular walks and explore safe alternative ways to meet your dog's needs.
2. Hire a Secure Field: Look for safe secure fields where your dog can have fun exploring without worrying about other dogs or people.
3. Provide Space: Find places to walk that give your dog all the space they need to feel safe.
4. Avoid Crowded Areas: Opt for walks in less frequented areas where you are less likely to encounter other people and their dogs.
5. Choose Wide Paths: Try to avoid narrow paths where it is difficult to turn around. Choose walks where you can easily change your route or move off the path.
6. Select the Right Equipment: I would recommend using a Y-shaped harness with two points of connection. You can then attach a two points of connection lead, which will help your dog to walk in balance beside you.
7. Change Walk Times: Vary the time of day you walk your dog, as this can impact the number of people and dogs you encounter. Early mornings or late evenings might offer a quieter walking experience.
8. Create a Toolbox: Prepare a toolbox filled with tools and strategies that you can use to support your dog. For example, Pattern Games, Stroking the Lead, and emergency U-turn can all be be helpful tools.
9. Walk with family or friends: Consider walking with a friend or family member to provide an extra layer of safety and support.
10. Observe your dogs Body Language: Recognising and observing your dog's body language. This awareness enables you to intervene and support your dog when needed.
By implementing these tips and tailoring them to your dog's specific needs, you can transform your walks into enjoyable stress-free adventures.
